As a flow-on Contract to our flagship Greater Sydney Bridges Upgrade Project, WaterNSW engaged Select Civil for the demolition, design and construction of a replacement bridge for the Avon Dam Road crossing at Nepean River.

The bridge was originally constructed from timber in the 1930’s, however was upgraded to precast concrete planks on mass-poured concrete piers in the 1980’s. Part of Select’s design scope was to retain and utilise the existing concrete piers into the structure, to minimize environmental footprint and construction timeframe.

Select and our engineering design team, Cardno, developed an integrated rock-anchor system that connected new bridge superstructure componentry to the underlying sandstone bedrock for additional strength. This would be paired with PSC concrete headstocks and transversely stressed planks, and bring the load rating of a new structure up to the current SM1600 loading configuration.

With the design and demolition phase completed, the new bridge construction is underway with final handover due for completion in June 2021, with all stakeholder satisfied with Select’s high-performing team and quality delivery to date.
