Redundant Mine & Shaft Remediation

Since 2003 Select have remediated 5 Vent Shaft & Mine Portal Sites for BHP / Illawarra Coal, these projects include;

  • Kemira Mine Portal
  • Port Kembla No 2 Shaft
  • Nebo Shafts 1 & 2
  • Corrimal No2 Shaft
  • Bulli No 4 Shaft

The remediation of these sites involves overcoming various potential issues such as Mine Gasses, Remote locations, Lack of Communications, Bush Fire Hazard, Difficult access & terrain and work in National Parks & SCA property requiring a high level of environmental planning.

A usual component for the projects is the removal of old power lines & poles from inaccessible areas on the Illawarra escarpment. Select Civils recent project for the remediation of Bulli No4

Shaft included the removal of 117 disused poles from bush areas [detailed in pictures below].

Other projects such as the Corrimal No2 shaft included the filling & capping of a 450m deep ventilation shaft.

The first project carried out by Select was the remediation of the Mt Kemira Portal & stabilisation of the excavated material at the site. This project involved construction of a large cascade below the portal to control runoff in heavy weather conditions.
