The excavation of the Ashfield Sewer Connection Shaft was carried out by Select Civil for Leighton Contractors as part of the Liverpool to Ashfield pipeline. The purpose of the shaft was to intercept a old brick sewer located 27m underground. Flows from the sewer where to be pumped from a pump station at the bottom of the shaft and transferred to the Liverpool STP for treatment.

The shaft to be excavated was 11m long, 6m wide and 27m deep. The shaft was located close to residential housing so noise & vibration here a real concern. Select worked with our client to overcome issues such as access, ventilation, wall support and a short construction timeframe. The result was a project delivered on time, on budget & with no incidents.

During the construction Select utilised some of our more specialised equipment such as our Longreach Excavators & Chameleon which allowed us to reach the full 27 vertical metres to the bottom of the shaft without the requirement for a crane & skip. The use of this equipment over a crane provides significant benefits in both cost & productivity.
